FOOD LUGGAGE

So my plastic Target bag is not hip and stylish enough to carry my lunch to work in? No!

I remember having at least 3 lunch boxes growing up prior to graduating to a brown paper bag.

  1. I had this huge purple box which resemble in a way, an igloo cooler that people take on picnics and to amusement parks like Great America!  That was way too big for a little petite 5th grader like me.
  2. There there was my red Mickey Mouse steel or tin lunch box.  Looking back it could probably be considered some vintage type piece.  I should have kept it, shoot!
  3. Lastly, had this green polyester-ish material lunch bag, and since lunch bags weren't as sophisticated as they are now, this bag allowed seepage of condensation and things just soaked through the bag sometimes - yeah I don't know what that was about.
Now the brown paper bag, I liked.  Not cost effective, but cool in my opinion.   Once I was done, I threw it away, no extra baggage to carry around.  Some lunch boxes/bags were so bulky that it was impossible to fit it into my backpack!  I don't like to lug around too much stuff, I didn't then and I don't now.  Now, if you ask my mom how cool it was to buy brown paper lunch bags each month, and she may tell disspell my cool theory.

What I do now - I always end up with a random plastic bag, or better yet, I just throw my food in my over sized purse!  Which means I risk having a smashed sandwich.

Week in Review

Monday - February 2, 2009

Here we go again – you know how Mondays are. Everyone has their game face on “Good Morning”, "How are you", "How was your weekend", etc. These questions come out of our mouths effortlessly. We are all hyping ourselves up, not to get through the week but the day. It appears that the weekends fly by, but workdays drag on. Maybe we should try hyping ourselves up on Sunday nights, I'm gonna try that and let you know how it works out next week.

Tuesday - February 3, 2009

Dude – its only Tuesday. There are actually people who wish it was Friday already. How about you humor yourself until at least Wednesday - jeez.

Wednesday - February 4, 2009

Today was my nephew's birthday. This had nothing to do with work, but I did feel bad that I wasn't in town to help him celebrate his 10th! Anyway, just like in my undergrad days, I always dreaded group work. I mean, I am a team player but there was always someone who never listened to or cooperated with the group, didn't pull their weight, or just was clueless altogether. Needless to say these feelings also exist in the corporate world. My day was filled with multiple debates, whining teammates and the start of another wrinkle in my forehead. Ok - now altogether "Is it Friday, yet??"

Thursday - February 5, 2009

Today was my co-worker's birthday! To be quite honest not much work got done today – starting the day celebrating my coworker’s birthday with breakfast bagels and donuts, random birthday questions - what are your plans, how old are you, did you get that sweater for your birthday?? A couple hours later taking them to lunch and 1 hour after returning from lunch was cake-time! What a great break within the week! Whose birthday is next??

Friday - February 6, 2009

Get me outta here. Got no plans, just don't want to be here 1 minute past 5 o'clock. Fridays are days when I start packing up my desk at ummm say 4pm. I am working at a spotless desk, no papers, no folders, as soon as 5 hit, I was gone.

As you can see the highlight of this week was a birthday - and I'm hoping for another next week!

There's cake in the breakroom!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Each year people make New Year's resolutions to get fit and eat healthier. While I'm not setting a resolution to work out more or stop eating red meat, I am going to make a conscience effort to stay away from "workplace birthday cake"!

One must learn that when you enter Corporate America your sweet tooth will be tempted almost everyday. Only the strongest will power will stop you from falling victim to the "newbie nine" (the number of pounds you will gain when you start your first corporate job), similar to the infamous "freshman fifteen" (number of pounds one might gain as a freshman in college).

It seems that there is always a birthday cake with lots of sugary frosting, to celebrate a colleague's birthday, double fudge brownies and macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies to bid one "Farewell or Bon Voyage" as they resign, a cupcake tower to congratulate a retirement, some creative apple fritter and/or caramel coconut bar made by that employee who just likes to bake and wants to show off their skills by bringing in their so-called "overflow" because they made too much, or lastly the decadent Harry and David chocolate truffles a vendor sent to say thanks for the business.

I have to admit - I've been caught up in this free for all munchfest: eating these goodies for breakfast and helping myself to another serving around 3:00pm to help me make it through the rest of the day.

So, instead of resolving that I join a gym that I will end up not going to and wasting my money or cutting out carbs (I love bread and potatoes too much) , I figure I should really resolve to not fall prey to the celebration peer pressures of the office and say "NO" to workplace birthday cake in 08!"
